Bastet Goddesswoman with a cat's head

My first organic 3D modeling challenge

During my Masters in Computer Graphics at BigRock, I had the opportunity to learn zBrush, an organic digital sculpting software, for the first time. The task was to create a 3D character of a deity of my choice in 5 days.
Starting with an online search for references and material, I concentrated on creating a personalised version of the Egyptian goddess Bastet.
Creating Bastet in 3D was a very challenging but rewarding experience that allowed me to deepen my knowledge of zBrush and return to modelling, although digitally. The project tested my digital sculpting skills and pushed me to explore new techniques and creative possibilities. It dusted off notions of anatomy and reminded me how much I have always enjoyed modelling.

Workflow & concept

Bastet, an Egyptian goddess depicted as a woman with a cat’s head, represented fertility, domestic protection, harmony and healing.
Her worship was particularly widespread in the Nile Delta, with the city of Bubastis as the centre of her cult.

A solar deity associated with the benevolent warmth of the star, she eventually became a lunar goddess and a symbol of femininity.
Identified by the Greeks with Artemis, she represented sensuality, charm, love, desire and fertility.

A dual goddess, like the cat with which she was associated, Bastet could be benevolent and peaceful (Protector, goddess of joy, pleasure and childbirth) or terrible and fierce (Sekhmet, goddess of war and medicine).
Bastet represents the essence of woman and femininity: love, sensuality, pleasure, independence and mystery.

The figure of Bastet, with its dual nature of feline and divine, has always fascinated me, so I decided to try my hand at 3D reproduction, trying to capture its grace and expressive power.

Some pictures of the process

Using zBrush, I started with a basic shape and then defined the proportions and silhouette of the goddess. I then carefully sculpted the details of the cat’s face, body and head, taking care to render the decorative elements. The final stage was to render and light the model using a simple set and to add some golden details.
