Rendering with ArnoldCalycantus project

Experimenting with photorealistic rendering and Arnold

During the course to become a 3D Artist a Varese at BigRock – institute of magic technologies, we also looked at Autodesk Maya software and what it can do in terms of photorealistic 3D rendering. We explored the use of Maya’s Hypershade and tried our hand at creating different materials.

Overall, it was a job I really enjoyed and the result was very satisfying. In addition, the work was chosen for a blog article, which you can find here.
I could safely say that rendering and texturing are the disciplines of 3D that give me the most satisfaction. I hope you enjoy it.

Workflow & concept

In this project I used Hypershade to render the glass, importing the diffusion map to create the ‘dirt’ effect on the transparency of the glass.

The bowl, on the other hand, was textured using Adobe Substance Painter. I found it easier to do this type of effect with the limited knowledge I had at the time. So I used Substance Painter to create the antiqued effect and the golden border.

The remote controller was a challenge. It was actually used from a template and I had to print out the exact keys. I achieved this effect by shifting the stencil and using an opaque white material.

The pen was also textured using the Adobe software, while for the placemat and table it was enough to import the material into Hypershade and adjust the size, repeat and layout, adjusting the lighting and effects to make the wood look its best.
